After the Marshall Fire: A New Build with Joy

Captain waiting patiently in the kitchen because sometimes good things happen here. We have a walnut island with a soft white perimeter for a client who loves to cook. (Photo by Jordan Katz for Laura Medicus Interiors).

This home is on the site of the client’s previous home which was lost to the Marshall Fire in 2021. They are a young couple and when I first met them, were expecting their first child. Instead of being in tears over what they had lost, they were filled with joy about the future. I don’t know that I would be able to do the same if the situation were reversed. Things are just things, but I ascribe more meaning to inanimate objects than I should. Their attitude was uplifting and inspiring!

The clients have traditional leanings so we used shaker cabinets with 5 piece drawers. We paneled the hood and the refrigerator which is almost dead center in the above photo. The floors are white oak kept natural. I don’t often have the chance to work on new builds. Most of my projects are homes that are 60 years or older. Let me tell you, a new build is thing of joy. The client’s father was the architect on this project.

The clients have a 36″ induction cooktop here. The oven underneath is a 30″ so we added a little furniture base to help make it not so awkward. Induction cooktops are very popular here in Colorado. I would love to start seeing some 36″ oven combinations to go with them. (Photo by Jordan Katz for Laura Medicus Interiors).
A view of the Laundry Room which is on the second floor where the family’s bedrooms are. We have room for them to add two more machines to this room (stackable) if they decide to grow their family. We’re doing this more and more where clients have room. (Photo by Jordan Katz for Laura Medicus Interiors).

We added wallpaper to the toilet room to make it more interesting….(Photo by Jordan Katz for Laura Medicus Interiors).
For their foyer – we added 3/4 paneling with wallpaper above to give it a traditional look. (Photo by Jordan Katz for Laura Medicus Interiors).
