The Secret Room Behind the Wardrobe: An Update

Sylvia’s secret room went viral in March and is technically not much of a secret anymore.  While all of the “fame” hasn’t brought any fortune, it’s been enormous fun for us as a family.   It all started with a cool article in Apartment Therapy.  Next, a writer from the Today Show contacted me.   Before I knew it, the story exploded.  It was found on websites in Germany, Australia, France, SwedenIsrael, South Korea and China (among the more exotic locales).  At one point, it was trending on Pop Sugar next to Kendall Jenner and the First Lady.

Being contacted by writers for these websites all over the world (via Facebook messenger for the most part) was a thrilling surprise and quite surreal at the same time.  I felt Andy Warhol give me a wink and an elbow nudge.

We live in a small, old house on a tree-lined street in a quaint little town in Colorado, yet one small room in this home has been seen by over one hundred thousand people around the world at this point.  Writing that sentence gives me pause.  It might not mean anything in the grand scheme of life.  But it does remind me of the importance of childhood.  It tells me that some of us still long for Virginia Woolf’s room of their own.  It shows me that we should value uniqueness and on a really basic level, it tells me that we still like things that are outside the ordinary.

We helped Sylvia move her bed into her hidden room last month.  This latest iteration was featured in the U.K.’s Daily Mail last week alongside all of the Meghan Markle madness.   Here are the photos I sent them showing her room as it is now.

The twin bed fit perfectly – it’s kind of funny how that worked out!

You can catch a video of me walking you through the space and talking about how the room was made here.  And Sylvia will take you through the wardrobe here.

It’s interesting that this is the least expensive room I’ve ever “done” and the one that will most certainly have the most fame.

One other thought:  Things aren’t perfect.  You and I aren’t perfect.  Don’t let that stop you from doing and making things.

  3. This is fascinating !! Always like a secret room idea 😊…
I’m wondering if there a smoke alarm install near the wardrobe incase of fire for safety precautions…I imagine the secret hideout can block out outside noise.

  4. Laura just wow! I have been dreaming for years of ways to add a secret passage or link between rooms in my house (I don’t think I have the space to do it) but this is amazing and confirms my faith that there is still buckets full of magic in the world. What a lucky Daughter you have!
