Black in home interiors always has a place for the dramatist at heart. When used well, black creates a striking backdrop for art, accessories and people. Ask a scientist and they’ll tell you that black is not a color. For lack of a better term, and being a “decorator,” I always call it a color. However for me, it’s not just a color, it’s a presence. Black creates an atmosphere in a way that other colors do not. For a lot of people (maybe most) colors carry emotional baggage both good and bad. I don’t think that black gets wrapped up in that type of thing as often. Having a black wall in your home is a quick and inexpensive way to amp up your atmosphere. It’s striking, dramatic and timeless. You want a design challenge that will potentially amp up the drama and the complements in your home? Paint a wall, a room, a ceiling – black. You can’t just sit back and wait for the magic to happen, you’ll need to work with it – sculpt it and learn to live with the drama it creates.
